THE FIRST THINGS TO DO UPON ARRIVAL IN ITALY
1.within 48 hours upon
arrival, the person hosting you must declare you as guest at
the local police station or to the urban authorities (for those
living outside the city of Rome). The form commonly known as
COMUNICAZIONE di CESSIONE FABBRICATO must
be fully filled and presented at the local police commission.
Along with it the following documents must be attached: photocopy
of the host's identification document or permit of stay (in
the case of a non citizen in Italy), the visitor's passport.
Alternatively, it is possible to send the documentation to
the area police commission through a registered mail.
2.within 8 working days upon entry in
Italy, you must present yourselves to request for the permit
of stay:

- a) At the Immigration Office at the
Police headquarters in Rome in Via Teofilo Patini, angolo
Via Salvati, in Tor Cervara - Tor Sapienza area, if you have
an entry visa type C (maximum validity of 90 days), or otherwise
coming from countries from which entry visa for reasons of
tourism is not required.
- b) At the local area Police Commissions
(present near where you stay), for all the other types of
entry visas (valid for more than 90 days).
If on the permit of stay there is a printing
error of the data brought back by the officials, one must to
go to the Immigration Office at the Rome Police headquarters
at Via Teofilo Patini, angolo via Salvati, in Tor Cervara - Tor
Sapienza area and request for the correction (even when the permit
of stay was obtained at the local Police Commission)
3. Once the permit of stay is granted, one must:
- Report to the Revenue office to request
for the Tax identification number.
- Report to the local Municipality to
request for certificate of residence and, one given the residence
certificate, request for the Identity card.
- Report to the area ASL (local health
services) to request for registration to the National Health
Service to obtain allocation of a family doctor.
IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS TO CARRY ALWAYS WITH YOU WHEN IN
ITALY

Identification document
for example the identity card or the passport; or authenticated
photocopy of the identification document;

At least one telephone
card;
-
At least two bus-subway
tickets since the tickets are not sold in transportation
means and those found without tickets are fined € 101;

At least two telephone
numbers of relatives and/or friends (for any eventuality);
-
Emergency telephone
numbers (free);
-
A paper sheet (preferably
certified by a doctor) on which to indicate: blood group,
eventual lifesaving medicine, eventual serious pathologies
or handicaps such as diabetic, thalassemic, cardiopatic,
undergoing haemodialysis etc;

In case one does
not speak Italian language it is important to always take
with you a sheet of paper written in Italian language where
some important personal information are indicated, to have
it read, to be understood (N.B. translate it also in your
mother tongue):

DOCUMENT LOSS OR THEFT
In case of theft or loss
of an identification document it is necessary to make declaration
of loss or theft immediately to the nearest area Police at that
moment (it is advisable to always photocopy one's own documents
after the issuance).
After reporting loss or theft of the passport, you must go your
consulate in Rome to present the declaration possibly with a
valid document (identity card, driver's license, even if valid
in national territory of belonging) and request for a Consular
Declaration that attests the applicant's identity (equipped with
a photo), or a Consular Passport.
After reporting the loss, theft or the permit of stay, one must
go to the immigration Office near the Rome Police headquarters
in Via Teofilo Patini, angolo via Salvati, in Tor Cervara - Tor
Sapienza area and request for a duplicate permit of stay (to
be compiled at the office). You need to present:
- The passport or the consular declaration
and the corresponding photocopies.
- 4 photos,
- Duty stamp.
For the following documents: tax identification
number, identity card and the driver's license equipped with
the police report, permit of stay and the passport require reference
to the issuing office.
USEFUL
INFORMATION
Health
-
To all the foreign
nationals (with or without documents), temporarily present
in the Italian territory, hospital attendance for emergency
cases and the essential ambulance treatments (even constant)
is guaranteed in cases of illness and accidents. Moreover,
the social cover and attendance for pregnancy and maternity
is assured.

To be able to benefit
from the National Health Services, foreigners without documents
must register as S.T.P (Straniero Temporaneamente Presente
- temporarily present foreigner); registration is done through
an identifying code valid in the whole of the national territory.
The code is anonymous and can only be used for scope of health.

Immigrant children
with and without documents can start and/or continue to take
obligatory vaccinations free of charge, presenting themselves
to the ASL (local health service centres).

ASL is useful in
case of general health problems while emergency cases are
referred to the First Aid (emergency health assistance).
Education
- Young children have a right and duty
to be enrolled in public schools
- Students have a right to scholarships
if they meet the requirements announced.
Housing
-
Useful information
on houses for rent can be found in newspapers and specialised
magazines. The specialised magazines can be obtained free
of charge at the real estate agencies.

It is important
to verify upon making a house rent contract whether it has
been registered at the Public Registry office.
Work
-
Even for the foreign
workers in Italy, it is obligatory to make a declaration
of income (Income tax return) every year. This helps to demonstrate
one's own income.

It is obligatory
to be enrolled at the (Centri per l'Impiego) Employment Centres.

It is possible to
obtain information on the current job offers or instructional
and professional refreshment courses at the COL, CILO, Informagiovani,
and Centri per l'Impiego. Moreover, one can look for a job
through temporary job agencies or by consulting specialised
journals.
Driving license
- Issuing of a driving licence is done
at the provincial Offices of Civil Motorization or through
a local driving school
Transport system

To benefit from the
public transport one must have the ticket before getting
into the means of transport, alternatively one can buy a
pass. Both can be acquired at the otherwise or to be in possession
of the subscription ticket.Both can be acquired at the tabaccheria
(tobacconists) and the newspapers stands
General information
-
Telephone cards are sold in the (tobacconist's)
with T symbol and in the newspaper stands. The cards are
found in various price, even for international calls.

City maps are sold
in the newspaper stands or in city's central stations (regional
train stations). Maps can be consulted free of charge on
affixed billboards at the central stations and in the subway
(metropolitan) stations, moreover still in the central stations
and in the central parts of the city, there are several express
Information Offices (free of charge) indicated with a symbol

Telephone directories and the yellow pages
(list of businesses, services, shops, etc. complete with
addresses ad telephone numbers) can be consulted free of
charge at coffee bars where a public telephone is available.
